Abstract: Azulene,a bluestructuralisomerof naphthalene,isintroducedas the backbonefor a new familyof Pd(II)-basedself-assemblies.Threeorganicligands,equippedwithvaryingdonorgroups,producethree[Pd$_2$L$_4$] cagesof differentcavitydimensions.Unexpectedly,the additionof organicdisulfonategueststo thesmallestlantern-shapedcage(featuringpyridinedonors)led to arapidandquantitativetransformationto a distorted-tetrahedral[Pd4L8] species.On the contrary,[Pd$_2$L$_4$] cagesformedfromligandswithisoquinolinedonorseitherjust encapsulatedthe guestsorshowedno interaction.Thetetrahedralspeciescouldbe fullyrevertedbackto its original[Pd$_2$L$_4$] topologyby capturingthe guestby another,strongerbinding[Pd$_2$L´$_4$] coordinationcage,narcissis-ticallyself-sortingfromthe firstcage.Theazulenes,servingascoloredhydrocarbonbackbonesof minimalatomcount,allowone to followcage assemblyand guest-inducedtransformationby thenakedeye. Furthermore,we proposethat theirpeculiarelectronicstructureinfluencesthe system’sassemblybehavior.
