Abstract: This paper elucidates the softening kinetics during isothermal annealing of an AlSi11 alloy manufactured by laserpowder bed fusion (L-PBF) by using in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction complemented bymicrostructure microscopy analysis. Annealing in the temperature range of 20 ◦C to 500 ◦C for one hour led toevolutions in the as-built L-PBF cellular structure, including partial fragmentation of the cell boundaries between20 ◦C and 300 ◦C; the breakdown and transformation into ultrafine Si-enriched particles in the range of 300 ◦C to400 ◦C; and subsequently coarsening at temperatures exceeding 400 ◦C. The evolution of the crystallite size for Siis consistent with the Ostwald ripening equation with an activation energy of 75.8 kJ mol􀀀 1, while the Al peaksregistered only marginal variations through all the thermal cycle. The examination of dislocation densities andgrain sizes, which varied from 4 × 1014 m􀀀 2 to 1 × 1014 m􀀀 2 and 15 μm to 13 μm respectively, in the temperaturerange of 20 ◦C to 500 ◦C, revealed a practical absence of recovery and recrystallization phenomena in the Almatrix. On the other hand, Si diffusion from the supersaturated Al matrix and the coalescence of particles assistedthe cellular structure transformation. Thus, the decrease in yield strength observed in the AlSi11 alloy subjectedto annealing treatments is primarily driven by a thermally assisted softening process, which is controlled by thediffusion of Si, rather than the annihilation of dislocations and grain growth in the Al matrix.
