Abstract: The changes in optical and luminescent characteristics of YAG:Nd single crystals exposed to 230-MeV Xe132 ions(fluence of 1011–1014 cm 2) have been analyzed using the methods of optical absorption as well as photo- and X-ray luminescence. The evolution of the optical absorption at 1.5-6.5 eV related either to the Nd3+ impurity ionsor radiation lattice defects with the rise of irradiation fluence has been considered. The excitation spectra oftypical Nd3+ f–f line emission as well as the defect-related broadband emission (2.2-3.9 eV) have been measuredin pristine and irradiated crystals at 10 K using the synchrotron radiation. The irradiation-induced attenuation ofthe impurity-related X-ray luminescence (significant decrease in lightsum) in YAG:Nd crystals has beenconsidered.
