Abstract: Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos are a well-recognized model organism for assessing toxicological effects due to their approximately 70% genetic similarity to humans, rapid development, and transparent embryonic stages. Investigating toxic effects in zebrafish embryos provides valuable insights into effects of cancer treatment on normal tissue. In this project, we focus on the use of X-ray radiation as a toxicity inducer to identify potential developmental disruptions in zebrafish embryos. The project is conducted within the R&D platform FLASHlab@PITZ, a collaboration between the Photo Injector Test Facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ), Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Max-Delbrück Center (MDC) in the field of radiation biology and radiation therapy. The initial phase focuses on optimizing and validating embryo handling and toxicity assessment methods, serving as foundation for future studies comparing ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) electron radiation with conventional X-ray radiation. The ultimate goal is to advance radiation-based therapies and validate the potential for healthy tissue-sparing effects with UHDR electron radiation.
