Abstract: High reliability is a very important goal for 3rd generationlight sources. Very often the beam availability is usedas the operation metrics to measure the reliability of the accelerator.A survey of several light sources revealed that thecalculation of this statistics varies significantly between thefacilities. This prevents a useful comparison of their reliabilities. The authors propose a specific metrics for the reliabilityof 3rd generation light sources; a metrics that willallow a detailed and meaningful comparison of these particleaccelerators.
