Report No.: PITHA 95/27

Abstract: In high energy physics, a good electron/hadron separation is required for the correct interpretation of events. At the Hl experiment, this task is in part fulfilled by a liquid argon calorimeter, which is extended by a transition radiation detector in the proton beam direction for a further improvement in the detection of electrons contained in dense jets. In this thesis, methods for a qualitative and a quantitative evaluation of the transition radiation detector will be developed. For this purpose, the cleanest possible sa1nples of electron and hadron tracks are needed. They will be selected using several methods adapted to the requirements of the analysis and relying on the exploitation of calorimeter information, as weil as the reconstruction of photon conversion vertices. By 1neans of the track samples thus gained, the distributions of energy deposited in the radial drift chambers by electrons and hadrons, respectively, will be determined, and the resulting possibilities for an electron/hadron separation will be calculated.
