Abstract: Angle-dispersive x-ray powder diffraction experiments were performed onsamarium metal up to 50 GPa. We report that the high-pressure distorted-fcc phase has thesame hR24 structure observed in praseodymium, but, unlike praseodymium, samarium doesnot undergo a transition to a second distorted-fcc phase. We also report a path-dependenttransition to a new phase, the structure of which has not yet been determined, which occurs onannealing followed by pressure decrease.
