In vitro radiobiological effects of ultra-high dose rate irradiation at FLASHlab@PITZ

2025

FLASH RADIOTHERAPY AND PARTICLE THERAPY CONFERENCE 2025, FRPT 2025, Prague, Czech Republic, 10 Dec 2025 - 12 Dec 2025, FRPT 2025, DESYprague, DESY, Czech Republic, 10 Dec 2025 - 12 Dec 20252025-12-102025-12-12  GO

Abstract: The dose rates from conventional (CDR) up to ultra-high 1014Gy/s(UHDR) are being enabled by the full FLASHlab@PITZ-beamline, commissioned in August 2025 for radiobiological studies at the Photo-Injector Test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ) with the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau. Dose rate escalation holds potential to expand the therapeutic window of cancer radiotherapy. Literature indicates that UHDR induces lower production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in water compared to CDR. This study investigates the effect of UHDR irradiation on oxidative and genotoxic stress in A549 adenocarcinoma and HEL299 healthy cells of human lung origin.
