Abstract: In order to exploit the full scientific potential of high-energy XFELs (electron energy > 10 GeV), it is necessary to provide adequate pump sources to enable pump-probe science. The users of the European XFEL have requested a THz source matching the machine repetition rate 10 Hz burst mode with up to 2700 bunches per burst. Moreover, there’s a specific demand for a tunable frequency and bandwidth covering the spectral range of 0.1-30 THz, enabling investigations into broad and narrow resonances in matter. The EuXFEL R&D project, STERN, is exploring beam-based radiation generation methods using Cherenkov waveguides and diffraction radiation to satisfy these user requirements. This presentation offers an overview of the radiation generation processes, detailing theoretical analysis, simulations, and insights from previous experimental results. Additionally, we cover the technical aspects of our experimental setup including the lattice and vacuum design. We furthermore discuss collecting, transporting and tuning the THz radiation effectively. This encompasses optimizing a transport line that bring the produced radiation to a diagnostics area to be characterized accurately.
