Abstract: A discussion of the photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of CoO, and the solid solution Co0.7 Zn 0.3O. At low temperatures, the spectra were detected using synchrotron radiation as a source of excitation. The PL and PLE spectra of CoO are more intense than the Co0.7 Zn 0.3O spectra. It is shown that in the 7.5–10.5 eV energy range, the PLE spectrum of Co0.7 Zn 0.3O is more intense than the spectrum in the 3.7–6.5 eV region. This could be caused by sufficiently intense optical p-s transitions from the valence zone to the conduction zone, formed by the 4s states of zinc.
