Abstract: The process pp !WJ=y provides a powerful probe of the production mechanism ofcharmonium in hadronic collisions, and is also sensitive to multiple parton interactions inthe colliding protons. Using the 2011 ATLAS dataset of 4.6 fb1 of pp collisions atps = 7TeV, the first observation is made of the production ofW + prompt J=y events in hadroniccollisions where theW boson and the J=y both decay to muons. A total of 29:2+7:56:5 W+prompt J=y events are observed, with a statistical significance of 5:3s. The productionrate as a ratio to the inclusiveW boson production rate is measured, and the double partonscattering contribution to the cross section is estimated.
