Abstract: Test beams are an essential tool for detector characterization for detectors used in particle physics, nuclear physics and adjacent fields. By providing multi-GeV particles with precise timing and momentum they enable unique test opportunities for detectors. Such test beams are for example available at CERN, Fermilab and DESY. The DESY II Test Beam Facility provides three beam lines with electrons/positrons with an energy range of 1-6 GeV. Between 400 - 700 users each year are using the test beams at DESY. The test beam remains a very important infrastructure to train the next generation of instrumentation experts, as close to 60% of the users are graduate students and postdocs. All the beam lines are equipped with pixel-beam telescopes that provide the users with reference tracks with a few micron resolution. These telescope are being used by four ut of the five groups at the test beam. DESY II is mainly operated to provide beam to the synchrotron light source PETRA III. As PETRA III is going to be replaced by a next-generation light source called PETRA IV, this will also affect the injector. A status of the current capabilities of the facility will be presented together with the potential upgrade options for the next decade.
