Abstract: FEL performance critically depends on electron beam emittance, a fundamental beam quality parameter, which is strongly dependent on the spatiotemporal characteristics of the photoinjector drive laser pulse. Here, we present our recent results on temporal pulse shaping capabilities of the NExt generation PhotocAthode Laser (NEPAL), the systems driving the photoinjectors of EuXFEL and and FLASH FEL facilities. In particular, we demonstrate generation of 25 ps flat-top deep-UV pulses, which have been shown to improve emittance, in comparison to a regular gaussian profile.Temporal pulse shaping is enabled by a spatial light modulator, allowing for high-resolution spectral attenuation and phase control. However, nonlinear processes in the system inevitably distort the pulse shape and therefore empirical optimization is required to achieve a desired shape.
