Abstract: Scaling the RF-accelerator concept to terahertz (THz) frequencies possesses several compelling advantages including compactness and intrinsic timing between the photoemission and driving field sources. However, the 2-orders-of-magnitude reduction in scale, brings new challenges in constructing and characterizing accelerator devices. A key factor is optimization of the transport of THz energy from the nonlinear optical source to the interaction point, low efficiencies of which can severely limit device performance. Here we report on the development of an electron gun pumped transversely by twin 120 µJ single-cycle THz pulses predicted to produce 100 fC electron bunches with 100 keV energy and a bunch duration of 20-40 fs
