Note: Building on the novel program Matter and Technologies (with the topic Accelerator Research and Development, ARD), where in a unique synergetic combination advanced plasma accelerator physics meets the latest radio-frequency superconducting accelerator and light source technology, a consortium of Helmholtz centers (DESY, HI-Jena/GSI, HZDR, KIT), with leading activities in both fields proposes to tackle the plasma dynamics with unprecedented resolution on the fundamental plasma wavelength scale. Such femto-scale probing (work package 1) with sources covering the range from terahertz via infrared to ultraviolet laser, x-ray, and particle pulses will provide unrivaled experimental information compliant with state-of-the-art predictive computer simulations. For example, real time observation of the injection or acceleration dynamics is expected to allow optimization strategies that enable the next generation of plasma accelerated beams with sufficient stability and control for the most demanding applications like the development of an ultra-compact free electron laser (FEL) demonstrator or compact ion beam tumor therapy. The challenging demonstration of FEL gain (work package 2) not only represents proof of the increased level of maturity of advanced acceleration concepts based on feedback from work package 1. It also opens the path for ultimate and inherently synchronous femto-scale probing with coherent x-ray pulses. The proposed joint development creates substantial added value for the program topic ARD by advancing critical research items on novel accelerators and supports the upcoming large-scale infrastructure projects like HIBEF at the European XFEL, and the ATHENA plasma accelerator infrastructure proposed for user operation. It strengthens the influence of Germany’s advanced accelerator program on European conceptual design studies on the next generation of particle accelerators and coherent light sources. All known publications ...
