Abstract: We review the experimental and theoretical status of dark matter searches at the LHC and the interplay with direct detection experiments. A particular emphasis is placed on discussing the usefulness and validity of effective operators and possible ways to go beyond this simple approach. Moreover, we consider cases where loop contributions are important for the comparison of collider searches and direct detection experiments.
