Report No.: DESY-M-00-05H
Abstract: Since a couple of years a significant contribution of unbunched protons ("coasting beams") has been observed in the HERA proton storage ring, leading to intolerable background conditions at the high energy physics experiments. The origin of coasting beam and various cures will be discussed. A method of resonantly exciting the coasting beam particles by firing a fast transverse kicker within the dump kicker gap of the HERA-p bunch pattern has been developed. As an alternative measure, the HERA-p collimation system will be modified in order to improve its monumentum collimation capability.
