Avoiding Death by Vacuum Decay: cutting on the MSSM parameter space

Abstract: After pinning down the parameters in the Standard Model to their currentvalues, it looks like the electroweak vacuum resides in a metastable state.Supersymmetry by the same mechanism as it stabilizes the Higgs massstabilizes the effective potential. However, supersymmetric theories sufferfrom possible qualitatively new instabilities. Constraints on suchnon-standard vacua help to constrain the available parameter space of themodel. A one-loop access to the effective potential in the MSSM gives newinsights on such constraints. Motivated by an instability in the one-looppotential, we derive bounds on the parameters similar to existing ones.Surprisingly, non-standard vacua show up in a direction that are missed inthe traditional approach.
