Abstract: Electron bunch lengths in the sub-10 fs regime and chargesof a few tens of picocoulombs are parameters required forfree-electron lasers [1] and are also a consequence fromthe intrinsic process in laser-driven plasma wake field acceleration[2]. Since the coherent spectrum of transitionradiation of these bunches carries the information on the longitudinalbunch profile in the form factor, the spectroscopyof transition radiation is an attractive method to determinethe electron bunch length. A double-prism spectrometerhas been developed and demonstrated for the single-stagemeasurement of mid-infrared transition radiation between2 μm and 18 μm. The spectrometer facilitates single-shotspectral measurements with high signal-to-noise ratio utilisinga line array of mercury cadmium telluride detectors. In this contribution, we present the spectrometer and measurementsof electron bunches at the Free-Electron Laser inHamburg (FLASH) at DESY. The results are compared toestablished bunch length monitors which are a multi-stagegrating spectrometer for transition radiation and a transversedeflecting structure accessing the longitudinal phase spaceof the electron bunches directly.
