%X ZnO and Zn0.998Mn0.002O ceramics were made by sintering in air at 1150 °C for 3 h. Two types of doped samples – furnace cooled and quenched from the sintering temperature in air – were prepared. Raman scattering, UV-vis optical absorption, photoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of obtained ceramics testify to the formation of MnZn2+ centers upon Mn doping, and the EPR spectra confirmed the effect of cooling rate on their number. In accordance with available literature data, three Raman modes at about 480, 530 and 580 cm−1 were revealed in Raman spectra of doped ceramics in addition to those of undoped ones. Based on the analysis of obtained and reported earlier experimental data, the conclusion has been made that the appearance of these additional Raman modes in ZnO:Mn materials is caused by the photoionization of MnZn2+ centers and the interaction of photoelectrons with phonons.
