%X Metastable ZnO—Lin<sub>n−2</sub>MeO<sub>n−1</sub> (Me = Sc<sup>3+</sup>, Ti<sup>4+</sup>, Ta<sup>5+</sup>) solid solutions with a rock-salt structure were synthesized through the solid-state reaction of ZnO with Li<sub>n−2</sub>Me<sup>n+</sup>O<sub>n−2</sub> (n = 3, 4, 5) complex oxides at 7.7 GPa and 1300–1500 K.
