TI - The development of pellet populations during submerged cultivation of Aspergillus niger

AB - Aspergillus niger is known as working horse for the industrial production of biofuels, enzymes, organic acids, antibiotics, and secondary metabolites. In submerged cultivation, the filamentous fungus can either have a dispersed or pelleted macromorphology, influencing the product formation capacity. Pelleted morphology seems to be beneficial for production of secondary metabolites and organic acids but is often accompanied by heterogeneity of the pellet population. As heterogeneity is not completely understood it is an interesting target for process optimization efforts. Our goal is therefore to understand genetic and process engineering mechanisms behind the development of population heterogeneities and their influence on formation of different products groups.
