Note: Die Elementarteilchenphysik befindet sich derzeit in einer faszinierenden Phase. Zum einen werden momentan große Mengen an Daten sowohl an Niedrig- als auch an Hochenergieexperimenten gewonnen und zum anderen beeinflussen kosmologische Beobachtungen das Feld stark. Wegen seiner hohen Energiereichweite und großen Statistik spielt dabei der Large Hadron Collider eine besondere Rolle. Der LHC hat bereits bewiesen, dass mit seiner Hilfe die Parameterräume verschiedener Erweiterungen des Standardmodells stark eingeschränkt werden können. Damit hat er wesentlich zur Falsifikation sehr gut fundierter theoretischer Ideen beigetragen. Zugleich hat er eine Reihe von Entdeckungen ermöglicht, von denen die wichtigste die Entdeckung des Higgsbosons ist. Das zentrale Thema des Graduiertenkollegs (GRK) ist die LHC-Forschung. Es baut damit auf die besonderen Stärken der Arbeitsgruppen der RWTH Aachen auf und knüpft an die traditionell enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen Theorie und Experiment an. Die experimentellen Gruppen sind Teil der CMS-Kollaboration und haben maßgeblich zum Detektorbau und -upgrade, Computing und der Datenanalyse beigetragen. Die theoretischen Gruppen bearbeiten eine große Bandbreite von Themen im Beriech der Präzisionsrechnungen in der Quantenchromodynamik bis hin zur Phänomenologie der Dunklen Materie. Das GRK ist darauf ausgelegt, die schwersten bekannten und vorgeschlagenen Teilchen zu erforschen. Im Fokus liegen: 1) das Higgsboson als möglicher Schlüssel zu neuer Physik; 2) das Topquark als das schwerste Quark, das dadurch vermutlich Verbindungen zur spontanen Symmetriebrechung aufweist; 3) plausible, bislang jedoch unentdeckte, schwere Teilchen jenseits des Standardmodells. Der Zweck dieses GRK ist insbesondere die Verbesserung des grundlegenden Verständnisses der Struktur des Higgsmechanismus durch die Untersuchung der Eigenschaften des Higgsbosons, wie seine Kopplungen an Fermionen, Eichbosonen und an sich selbst. Des Weiteren wird die besondere Rolle des Topquarks, sowohl als Quelle wichtiger Untergrundprozesse als auch als Verbindung zu neuer Physik, ausgenutzt. Darüber hinaus werden die Wirkungsquerschnitte des Topquarks genutzt, um das Standardmodell zu testen und fundamentale Parameter zu extrahieren. Schlussendlich wird das volle Potential des LHC bezüglich der Entdeckung schwerer Dunkle-Materie-Teilchen genutzt. Die Promovierenden erhalten eine Doppelbetreuung und werden in internationale Kollaborationen eingebunden. Sie besuchen Vorlesungen, Blockkurse, Seminare, externe Schulen und Konferenzen. Darüber hinaus profitieren sie vom Center for Young Academics der RWTH.
