680 _ _ |a Contributing to disruptive advances in scientific instrumentation and measurement capability is a major driving force behind this proposal for a Helmholtz Young Investigator Group at DESY. Specifically, the proposed research aims at exploring the vast opportunities and synergies emerging at the boundary of ultra-fast optics and nonlinear micro-photonics. The research plan includes the following 3 topics: 1. Novel ultra-fast microphotonic light sources will be developed that can enable optical measurements in the spectral and temporal domain with high precision and high speed. Amongst others, such sources are of high relevance to high-bandwidth data transfer, pollution monitoring, navigation as well as fundamental scientific research. 2. Ultra-fast pulses and microphotonic structures will be used to provide unprecedentedly sensitive measurements of electron beams in accelerators and X-ray sources. This is a prerequisite for exploiting the potential of free-electron laser (such as FLASH and the European XFEL at DESY) and for achieving imaging with atomic scale on ultra-short time scales, providing unique research tools for biological, medical and material research. 3. Ultra-fast microphotonic sources will be used for absolute and precise astronomical spectrometers calibration. This will enable searches for extra-solar planets, dark matter as well as varying fundamental physical constants.
