520 _ _ |a Analyses based on the heavy quark data collected by the H1 and ZEUS experiments at the HERA ep collider in the deep inelastic scattering regime are presented. Charm and beauty cross sections are measured and the corresponding heavy quark masses extracted from the data. The running of the charm quark mass can be established using only the HERA data and tested against the predictions of pQCD.
