Note: The development and characterisation of bulk metallic glass is currently one of the most dynamic fields of materials science. Over the last few years, the development of ductile bulk metallic glasses has been in the focus of research. Ductility is one essential prerequisite for many applications of bulk metallic glasses. The aim of this project is to investigate the correlation of mechanical properties with atomic structure using Synchrotron Radiation techniques. We will use a combination of state-of-the-art experimental techniques (synchrotron radiation-based XRD, XAFS and neutron diffraction) and computational techniques (reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation) to resolve the atomic-level structure of metallic glasses. With the Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor (HASYLAB), DESY has world-leading hard X-ray scattering facilities, in which Zhejiang University is a well recognized user. Zhejiang University is very active in the development of new alloy systems and has several laboratories for sample preparation and mechanical and thermodynamic testing. We will focus on studies of the ductile-brittle transition mechanism in bulk metallic glasses from an atomic structure point of view.
