Note: The Hunsrück Slate is one of the most important Konservatlagerstätten of the Devonian and is also internationally known as an outstanding fossil locality. The Hunsrück fossils, especially faunal organisms, are characterized by a high diversity. The fossils are particularly well preserved, partially also with soft tissues. Its biodiversity is well known and studied for the area of Bundenbach and Gemünden. But there are regional differences and variations in the incidence of certain taxa and their preservation, which is on the one hand controlled by taphonomic factors and on the other hand by regional differences in the former habitat and depositional environment. One part of the proposed project will include the investigation of these differences and their causes. Thereby, the focus is on the rich fauna of the Hunsrück Slate of Mayen, which marks the transitional area between the Rhenish Normal Facies to the Conservation Facies of the Hunsrück Slate, and which almost has been unstudied so far. The aim of this project is the reconstruction of the paleoecology (based on the ecospace concept), the diversity and taphonomic characterisation of fossils in this facial transition area and the comparison of the results with data from the core area of the Konservatlagerstätte of the Hunsrück slate and other important Konservatlagerstätten.
