Combined In-Solution Fragment Screening and Crystallographic Binding-Mode Analysis with a Two-Domain Hsp70 Construct
Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) isoforms are key players in the regulation of protein homeostasis and cell death pathways and are therefore attractive targets in cancer research. Developing nucleotide-competitive inhibitors or allosteric modulators, however, has turned out to be very challenging for this protein family, and no Hsp70-directed therapeutics have so far become available. [...]

The role of CE16 exo-deacetylases in hemicellulolytic enzyme mixtures revealed by the biochemical and structural study of the novel TtCE16B esterase
Acetyl esterases belonging to the carbohydrate esterase family 16 (CE16) is a growing group of enzymes, with exceptional diversity regarding substrate specificity and regioselectivity. However, further insight into the CE16 specificity is required for their efficient biotechnological exploitation. [...]

Crystal structure of the tegument protein UL82 (pp71) from human cytomegalovirus
Protein science 33(3), e4915 () [10.1002/pro.4915]  GO
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is an opportunistic pathogen that infects a majority of the world population. It may cause severe disease in immunocompromised people and lead to pregnancy loss or grave disabilities of the fetus upon congenital infection. [...]

Trypanosoma brucei Invariant Surface Glycoprotein 75 Is an Immunoglobulin Fc Receptor Inhibiting Complement Activation and Antibody-Mediated Cellular Phagocytosis
Various subspecies of the unicellular parasite Trypanosoma brucei cause sleeping sickness, a neglected tropical disease affecting millions of individuals and domestic animals. Immune evasion mechanisms play a pivotal role in parasite survival within the host and enable the parasite to establish a chronic infection. [...]

Activation of Thoeris antiviral system via SIR2 effector filament assembly
Nature 627(8003), 431 - 436 () [10.1038/s41586-024-07092-x]  GO
To survive bacteriophage (phage) infections, bacteria developed numerous anti-phage defence systems1,2,3,4,5,6,7. Some of them (for example, type III CRISPR–Cas, CBASS, Pycsar and Thoeris) consist of two modules: a sensor responsible for infection recognition and an effector that stops viral replication by destroying key cellular components8,9,10,11,12. Distinguishing Axion-Like Particles from Extended Higgs Sector Models in tt production at the LHC
DPG Spring Meeting (German Physical Society), DPG2024, KarlsruheKarlsruhe, Germany, 4 Mar 2024 - 8 Mar 20242024-03-042024-03-08  GO
As an extension of the standard model, Vector Like Quarks provide a possible solution to various unsolved issues, such as the hierarchy problem. This analysis focuses on the single production of the vector-like top quark T′, in the decay channel T′→ tH (H→ WW), in the final state with two opposite sign leptons. [...]

Phosphorylation of the alpha-I motif in SYMRK drives root nodule organogenesis
Symbiosis receptor- like kinase SYMRK is required for root nodule symbiosis between legume plants and nitrogen- fixing bacteria. To understand symbiotic signaling from SYMRK, we determined the crystal structure to 1.95 Å and mapped the phosphorylation sites onto the intracellular domain. [...]

Deep Inelastic Scattering events for photon and heavy boson TMDs
DPG Spring Meeting (German Physical Society), DPG2024, KarlsruheKarlsruhe, Germany, 4 Mar 2024 - 8 Mar 20242024-03-042024-03-08  GO
Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events at HERA are the most precise DIS measurement to date, which constitutes an important tool to study transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. In this study, we introduce standard DIS Monte Carlo events recreating HERA conditions, and apply their cross section as a constraint for both photon and heavy boson TMDs in the Parton Branching Method..

Induced gravitational waves and baryon asymmetry fluctuations from primordial black hole formation
[DESY-23-143; arXiv:2309.14993]
We consider black hole formation due to the gravitational collapse produced by large density fluctuations during an epoch of reheating with a stiff equation of state and calculate the induced gravitational wave spectrum. By considering the existing bounds on the total energy density of gravitational waves today, we find constraints on the parameter space of this scenario. [...]

DPG Spring Meeting (German Physical Society), DPG2024, KarlsruheKarlsruhe, Germany, 4 Mar 2024 - 8 Mar 20242024-03-042024-03-08  GO
The Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson is predicted to be CP-even. Measurements from Run 2 data at the LHC have excluded a purely CP-odd state at 3 standard deviations. [...]
