Photoionization of metastable heliumlike $C^{4+}$($1s\,2s\; ^3S_ 1)$ ions: Precision study of intermediate doubly excited states
In a joint experimental and theoretical endeavor, photoionization of metastable $C^{4+}$($1s\,2s\; ^3S_ 1)$ ions via intermediate levels with hollow, double-K-vacancy configurations $2s2p, 2s3p, 2p3s, 2p3d, 2s4p, 2p4s$, and $2p4d$ has been investigated. High-resolution photon-ion merged-beams measurements were carried out with the resolving power reaching up to 25 800 which is sufficient to separate the leading fine-structure components of the $2s2p^{3}P$ term. [...]

X-ray spectroscopy with variable line spacing based on reflection zone plate optics
Optics letters 43(18), 4390 - 4393 () [10.1364/OL.43.004390]  GO
X-ray spectroscopy is a method, ideally suited for investigating the electronic structure of matter, which has been enabled by the rapid developments in light sources and instruments. The x-ray fluorescence lines of life-relevant elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are located in the soft x-ray regime and call for suitable spectrometer devices [...]

XUV double-pulses with femtosecond to 650 ps separation from a multilayer-mirror-based split-and-delay unit at FLASH
Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and X-ray free-electron lasers enable new scientific opportunities. Their ultra-intense coherent femtosecond pulses give unprecedented access to the structure of undepositable nanoscale objects and to transient states of highly excited matter [...]

Megahertz serial crystallography
The new European X-ray Free-Electron Laser is the first X-ray free-electron laser capable of delivering X-ray pulses with a megahertz inter-pulse spacing, more than four orders of magnitude higher than previously possible. However, to date, it has been unclear whether it would indeed be possible to measure high-quality diffraction data at megahertz pulse repetition rates. [...]

Soft X-ray Spectroscopy as a Probe for Gas-Phase Protein Structure: Electron Impact Ionization from Within
Preservation of protein conformation upon transfer into the gas phase is key for structure determination of free single molecules, for example using X‐ray free‐electron lasers. In the gas phase, the helicity of melittin decreases strongly as the protein's protonation state increases. [...]

Time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy: From a bound molecule to an isolated atom
Due to its element and site specificity, inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy is a widely used technique to probe the chemical structure of matter. Here, we show that time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy can be employed to observe ultrafast chemical reactions and the electronic response to the nuclear motion with high sensitivity. [...]

Near-$K$-Edge Double and Triple Detachment of the $\mathrm{F^−}$ Negative Ion: Observation of Direct Two-Electron Ejection by a Single Photon
Double and triple detachment of the $\mathrm{F^{−}(1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6})}$ negative ion by a single photon have been investigated in the photon energy range 660 to 1000 eV. The experimental data provide unambiguous evidence for the dominant role of direct photodouble detachment with a subsequent single-Auger process in the reaction channel leading to $\mathrm{F^{2+}}$ product ions [...]
