Role of local structural distortion in driving ferroelectricity in GdCrO$_{3}$
emperature-dependent synchrotron x-ray diffraction and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies were performed to understand the role of structural characteristics in driving the magnetoelectric multiferroic properties of GdCrO$_{3}$. The results suggest that the distortion in the structure appears to be associated with the off-center displacement of Gd atoms together with octahedral rotations via displacement of the oxygen ions in GdCrO$_{3}$ [...]

A call for a round robin study of XAFS stability and platform dependence at synchrotron beamlines on well defined samples
Round robin studies have been used across fields of science for quality control testing and to investigate laboratory dependencies and cross-platform inconsistencies as well as to drive forward the improvement of understanding of experimental systems, systematic effects and theoretical limitations. Here, following the Q2XAFS Workshop and Satellite to IUCr Congress 2017 on `Data Acquisition, Treatment, Storage – quality assurance in XAFS spectroscopy', a mechanism is suggested for a suitable study across XAFS (X-ray absorption fine-structure) beamlines and facilities, to enable each beamline to cross-calibrate, provide representative test data, and to enable collaborative cross-facility activities to be more productive [...]

Atomic level structure of Ge-Sb-S glasses: Chemical short range order and long Sb-S bonds
The structure of Ge$_{20}$Sb$_{10}$S$_{70}$, Ge$_{23}$Sb$_{12}$S$_{65}$ and Ge$_{26}$Sb$_{13}$ S$_{61}$ glasses was investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge and Sb K-edges as well as Raman scattering. Magnetoelastic coupling at spin-glass-like transition in $\mathrm{Sr_{3}NiSb_{2}O_{9}}$
We report a characteristic spin-glass-like behavior in $\mathrm{Sr_{3}NiSb_{2}O_{9}}$, as confirmed from the low-field dc magnetometry and ac susceptibility measurements. The memory effects in the dc magnetometry exhibit similar characteristic features of the spin-glass systems. [...]
