Monitoring the Interaction of CO with Graphene Supported Ir Clusters by Vibrational Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Calculations
The interaction of carbon monoxide (CO) with graphene supported Ir cluster (Ir/graphene/Ir(111)) and a Ir(111) single crystal surface was studied by infrared reflection–adsorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). The cluster morphology was characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations predicted the adsorption frequencies of CO molecules on the Ir single crystal surface and clusters. Role of Precursor Carbides for Graphene Growth on Ni(111)
Surface X-ray Diffraction was used to study the transformation of a carbon-supersaturated carbidic precursor toward a complete single layer of graphene in the temperature region below 703 K without carbon supply from the gas phase. The excess carbon beyond the 0.45  monolayers of C atoms within a single Ni2C layer is accompanied by sharpened reflections of the |4772| superstructure, along with ring-like diffraction features resulting from non-coincidence rotated Ni2C-type domains. In this chapter surface-sensitive X-ray diffraction is introduced as an important crystallographic tool for the investigation of surfaces and nanostructures under high pressure reaction conditions and elevated temperatures which are relevant for industrial catalysis.
