Damage accumulation in thin ruthenium films induced by repetitive exposure to femtosecond XUV pulses below the single-shot ablation threshold
The process of damage accumulation in thin ruthenium films exposed to multiple femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) free-electron laser (FEL) pulses below the critical angle of reflectance at the FEL facility in Hamburg (FLASH) was experimentally analyzed. The multi-shot damage threshold is found to be lower than the single-shot damage threshold [...]

Towards Chirp Control of XUV Free Electron Lasers
8th EPS-QEOD EUROPHOTON CONFERENCE, BarcelonaBarcelona, Spain, 2 Sep 2018 - 7 Sep 20182018-09-022018-09-07  GO
We use 267nm femtosecond laser pulses to modulate electrons of a XUV free electron laser. By changing the chirp of this laser pulses we can influence the chirp of the generated XUV FEL pulses, which are characterized by THz streaking. [...]

Time-resolved electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis of photodissociation: Photoelectron spectra of Fe(CO)$_5$ , Fe(CO)$_4$ , and Fe(CO)$_3$
The prototypical photoinduced dissociation of Fe(CO)$_5$ in the gas phase is used to test time-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for studying photochemical reactions. Upon one-photon excitation at 266 nm, Fe(CO)$_5$ successively dissociates to Fe(CO)$_4$ and Fe(CO)$_3$ along a pathway where both fragments retain the singlet multiplicity of Fe(CO)$_5$. [...]

Photoionization of metastable heliumlike $C^{4+}$($1s\,2s\; ^3S_ 1)$ ions: Precision study of intermediate doubly excited states
In a joint experimental and theoretical endeavor, photoionization of metastable $C^{4+}$($1s\,2s\; ^3S_ 1)$ ions via intermediate levels with hollow, double-K-vacancy configurations $2s2p, 2s3p, 2p3s, 2p3d, 2s4p, 2p4s$, and $2p4d$ has been investigated. High-resolution photon-ion merged-beams measurements were carried out with the resolving power reaching up to 25 800 which is sufficient to separate the leading fine-structure components of the $2s2p^{3}P$ term. [...]

Mechanism of single-shot damage of Ru thin films irradiated by femtosecond extreme UV free-electron laser
Optics express 26(15), 19665 - 19685 () [10.1364/OE.26.019665]  GO
Ruthenium is a perspective material to be used for XUV mirrors at free-electron laser facilities. Yet, it is still poorly studied in the context of ultrafast laser-matter interaction. [...]

Probing the non-equilibrium transient state in magnetite by a jitter-free two-color X-ray pump and X-ray probe experiment
Structural dynamics 5(5), 054501 () [10.1063/1.5042847]  GO
We present a general experimental concept for jitter-free pump and probe experiments at free electron lasers. By generating pump and probe pulse from one and the same X-ray pulse using an optical split-and-delay unit, we obtain a temporal resolution that is limited only by the X-ray pulse lengths. [...]

XUV double-pulses with femtosecond to 650 ps separation from a multilayer-mirror-based split-and-delay unit at FLASH
Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and X-ray free-electron lasers enable new scientific opportunities. Their ultra-intense coherent femtosecond pulses give unprecedented access to the structure of undepositable nanoscale objects and to transient states of highly excited matter [...]

CAMP@FLASH: an end-station for imaging, electron- and ion-spectroscopy, and pump–probe experiments at the FLASH free-electron laser
The non-monochromatic beamline BL1 at the FLASH free-electron laser facility at DESY was upgraded with new transport and focusing optics, and a new permanent end-station, CAMP, was installed. This multi-purpose instrument is optimized for electron- and ion-spectroscopy, imaging and pump–probe experiments at free-electron lasers [...]

Time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy: From a bound molecule to an isolated atom
Due to its element and site specificity, inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy is a widely used technique to probe the chemical structure of matter. Here, we show that time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy can be employed to observe ultrafast chemical reactions and the electronic response to the nuclear motion with high sensitivity. [...]
