Note: Soft X-ray transmission polarizer based on ferromagnetic thin films
A transmission polarizer for producing elliptically polarized soft X-ray radiation from linearly polarized light is presented. The setup is intended for use at synchrotron and free-electron laser beamlines that do not directly offer circularly polarized light for, e.g., X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements or holographic imaging. A new class of copolymer colloids with tunable, low refractive index for investigations of structure and dynamics in concentrated suspensions
Highly charged polymer colloids may serve as model systems for the investigation of condensed matter, if they self-organize to liquid-like, glassy or crystalline phases. Multiple scattering due to refractive index differences of colloidal particles and suspending medium is a serious problem when utilizing light scattering experiments for these investigations. [...]

Structure and Stability of PEG- and Mixed PEG-Layer-Coated Nanoparticles at High Particle Concentrations Studied In Situ by Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering
Ligand-layer structure and stability of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) coated with α-methoxypoly(ethylene glycol)-ω-(11-mercaptoundecanoate) (PEGMUA) layers and mixed layers of PEGMUA and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) at high AuNP concentrations are studied in situ by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The thickness of the ligand layer is modified by the molecular weight of the PEG-ligands (2 and 5 kDa), and the PEG-grafting density is decreased by coadsorption of MUA. [...]

Temperature dependence of the hydrogen bond network in trimethylamine N-oxide and guanidine hydrochloride–water solutions
 GO
We present an X-ray Compton scattering study on aqueous Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and guanidine hydrochloride solutions (GdnHCl) as a function of temperature. Independent from the concentration of the solvent, Compton profiles almost resemble results for liquid water as a function of temperature. [...]

Implications of a Temperature-Dependent Magnetic Anisotropy for Superparamagnetic Switching
The macroscopic magnetic moment of a superparamagnetic system has to overcome an energy barrier in order to switch its direction. This barrier is formed by magnetic anisotropies in the material and may be surmounted typically after $10^9 - 10^{12}$ attempts per second by thermal fluctuations. [...]

Characterization of the LCLS “nanosecond two-bunch” mode for x-ray speckle visibility spectroscopy experiments
SPIE Optics + Optoelectronics, 2017, Prague, Czech Republic, Meeting locationPrague, Czech Republic, Proceedings of SPIE 10237, 102370N (2017) [10.1117/12.2265454]  GO
The generation of two X-ray pulses with tunable nanosecond scale time separations has recently been demonstrated at the Linac Coherent Light Source using an accelerator based technique. This approach offers the opportunity to extend X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy techniques to the yet unexplored regime of nanosecond timescales by means of X-ray Speckle Visibility Spectroscopy. Tuning the Size of Thermoresponsive Poly(N-Isopropyl Acrylamide) Grafted Silica Microgels
Gels 3(3), 34 (2017) [10.3390/gels3030034]  GO
Core-shell microgels were synthesized via a free radical emulsion polymerization of thermoresponsive poly-(N-isopropyl acrylamide), pNipam, on the surface of silica nanoparticles.Pure pNipam microgels have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of about 32 C. The LCST varies slightly with the crosslinker density used to stabilize the gel network. [...]
