All-Optical Electron Acceleration with Ultrafast THz Pulses

210 pp. (2017) = Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Diss., 2017
This thesis discusses a series of advances toward - and resulting in -the demonstration of the first ultrafast THz-driven electron gun, a technology with the potential to deliver unprecedented electron beam quality to scientists studying matter at the ultrafast and ultrasmall scale via electron diffraction or x-ray imaging. In Part 1, we discuss various advances in generation of high energy pulsed THz radiation, a spectral regime uniquely effective at accelerating electrons but historically lacking in effcient sources. High energy multi-cycle terahertz generation
[DESY-THESIS-2017-039]

Hamburg : Verlag Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, DESY-THESIS, 198 pp. (2017) [10.3204/PUBDB-2017-11222] = Universität Hamburg, Diss., 2017  GO
Development of compact electron accelerators and free-electron lasers requires novel acceleration schemes at shorter driving wavelengths. The Axsis project seeks to developterahertz based electron acceleration as well as the high energy terahertz sources required. [...]

Understanding plasmon-mediated electron emission and energy transfer on the nanometer length scale is critical to controlling light−matter interactions at nanoscale dimensions. In a high-resolution lithographic material, electron emission and energy transfer lead to chemical transformations. [...]

Off-surface optic axis birefringent filters for smooth tuning of broadband lasers

Applied optics 56(28), 7815 - 7825 (2017) [10.1364/AO.56.007815]  GO
ddc:530
Transition metal-doped gain media, such as Ce:LiCAF, Ti:sapphire, Cr:ZnSe, and Fe:ZnSe, possess wide gain bandwidths that could provide ultra broadly tunable laser output with the usage of adequate intracavity tuning elements. Birefringent filters (BRFs) are a low-cost and easy to use solution for tuning. [...]

Ellipticity dependence of high-harmonic generation in solids originating from coupled intraband and interband dynamics
ddc:500
The strong ellipticity dependence of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in gases enables numerous experimental techniques that are nowadays routinely used, for instance, to create isolated attosecond pulses. Extending such techniques to solids requires a fundamental understanding of the microscopic mechanism of HHG. [...]

Laser-Induced Linear-Field Particle Acceleration in Free Space
ddc:000
Linear-field particle acceleration in free space (which is distinct from geometries like the linac that requires components in the vicinity of the particle) has been studied for over 20 years, and its ability to eventually produce high-quality, high energy multi-particle bunches has remained a subject of great interest. Arguments can certainly be made that linear-field particle acceleration in free space is very doubtful given that first-order electron-photon interactions are forbidden in free space. [...]
