Insights into the electronic structure of OsO$_2$ using soft and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory
Theory and experiment are combined to gain an understanding of the electronic properties of OsO$_2$, a poorly studied metallic oxide that crystallizes in the rutile structure. Hard and soft valence-band x-ray photoemission spectra of OsO$_24 single crystals are in broad agreement with the results of density-functional-theory calculations, aside from a feature shifted to high binding energy of the conduction band. More than a decade after the discovery of the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interface between the band insulators LaAlO3 (LAO) and SrTiO3 (STO) its microscopic origin is still under debate. In the rapidly growing field of spintronics, simultaneous control of electronic and magnetic properties is essential, and the perspective of building novel phases is directly linked to the control of tuning parameters, for example, thickness and doping.
